HJC Chaired the Fifth Meeting of Palestinian - Canadian Steering Committee for Justice Sector

On Nov 28, 2016 – The Palestinian - Canadian Steering Committee for Justice Sector held the fifth meeting chaired by High Judicial Council represented by Acting Chief Justice Chancellor Emad Saleem Saad to discuss courthouse complex in Tulkarim and Hebron Courthouse Construction Project. The committee included Head of Canadian Cooperation David Fournier, Deputy of Ministry of Justice Mohammed Abu- Sondos, Assistant Attorney General Ashraf Ereqat, UNDP Special Representative Mr. Roberto Valent, and representatives from HJC, attorney General Office, Ministry of Finance and Planning, CIDA, UNOPS.

The fifth meeting aimed at following up the implementation of the Canadian Project and to overcome challenges regarding courthouse complex in Tulkarim, and the engineering design phase for Hebron Courthouse and ways to cope with international standards and human rights also to be real translation for the strategic plan of Judicial Authority.

In his speech, Chancellor Saad thanked donors and partners in Canadian Project especially CIDA, UNDP and UNOPS assuring the importance of this project in elevating mechanism of judicial process and reforming litigation environment in addition to providing suitable justice services for citizens and to facilitate access to justice.

His Excellency informed the attendance that HJC worked hard to overcome challenges and obstacles faced the constructions of courts, assuring the importance of integration and partnership in work process between all partners to come up with tangible results; knowing that the Canadian Project is considered a fruitful experience in building courts.

For his part, Mr. Fournier expressed his appreciation to HJC cooperation and efforts to raise the standards of litigation environment and work mechanism of Palestinian judiciary; mentioning that the project of Tulkarim and Hebron courthouses construction is one of the biggest projects that have been implemented by CIDA in Palestine.   

Both UNOPS and UNDP representatives delivered presentations on latest developments regarding Tulkarim courthouse and constructions of Hebron Courthouse.

Head of Facility Management Committee Mr. Sharaka talked about four requirements regarding constructions of Hebron Courthouse.

It is worth noting that Chief Justice Advisor Mr. Issam Akel conducted the discussion during the meeting.
