Chief Justice Chancellor Issa Abu Sharar met with Representative of Canada to the Palestinian Authority Ms. Robin Wettlaufer and Head of Canadian Cooperation Mr. Jason Tulk to discuss latest developments on judicial reform process after three months of discontinuation as a result to the spread of Coronavirus "COVID 19".

His Excellency indicated that state of emergency has stopped the advance prepared plan of providing judiciary with new judges and reactivation of Technical Office; it also has frozen the endorsement of legislations proposed by Transitional High Judicial Council and judicial training program. Not to mention the discontinuation of rebuilding Judicial Inspection Department and organizational structure of courts.

Chancellor Abu Sharar assured that the Judicial Authority Emergency Committee worked on the persistence of minimal official working hours in courts during state of emergency to deal with case disposal for detention cases and requests for release.

Chief Justice passed thanks to Government of Canada for their support to judicial authority through Facility Management Project DYMOMA and Hebron Courthouse Project, and he extended an invitation to Ms. Wettlaufer to visit the site of Hebron Courthouse to be acquainted with the construction process.

Chancellor Abu Sharar called the Government of Canada to lead the efforts of donor community to build court complex in Ramallah instead of the current building which is not suitable for litigation environment.

During the meeting, the attendees discussed challenges that may be raised as a result of Israeli annexation to parts of West Bank.

For her part, Ms. Wettlaufer expressed Canada commitment to support Palestinian Authority in its efforts to enhance access to justice and to gain back public trust in judiciary. She added, "Canada supports Judicial Authority through building new courthouses in Tulkarim and Hebron, and strengthens HJC ability in facility management in courts".
