During a Visit to the New Supreme Judicial Council Building

30/8/2009

Dr. Fayyad reiterates the significance of the Independence of the Judiciary and Respect of the Provisions of the Law

Prime Minister Salam Fayyad announced that the Authority’s commitment towards the Judicial Authority is genuine, deep and unremitting until work in this practical and significant facility is completed. Abu Shrar said that the Palestinian Authority has accomplished a lot in peace and security-keeping for the citizens, and that the sector of justice should be supported until citizens feel that equity and justice have been achieved. Due to that, work upon the judicial aspect has to be concluded.

Fayyad said that the Palestinian Authority would make sure that no one would be above the law, to which the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas are committed, because without this significant facility there would be no independent Palestinian state. He said that they have discussed in the government’s program the significance of the judicial institution as a guardian of the people’s rights. They have also addressed the need to safe-guard the judges’ verdicts so as to spread a feeling of equity among the citizens.

Chief Justice and Head of Supreme Judicial Council, Issa Abu Shrar praised the continued support provided by President Mahmoud Abbass and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to the Judicial Authority to develop its facility. Abu Shrar said that they were keen on the independence of the Judiciary which stems from the significance of having an independent un-politicized judiciary helping it to remain impartial and just. Similarly they were keen on the independence of the judges in their position.

Both Dr. Fayyad’s and Abu Shrar’s statements came at the beginning of their meeting with the members of the Supreme Judicial Council during Fayyad’s visit today to the new Supreme Judicial Council and the High Court buildings.  During the visit, which started at 12:00, there was a meeting with Judge Abu Shrar followed by another with the Supreme Judicial Council and the heads of the administrative units at the Council. The Prime Minister then checked the new rooms of the  High Court and the Court house and the different Council departments
